Newbie warning. Sorry if this is an old/dead topic.
What's legal to use and what credit / money does a musician / DJ need to give to artists they crib from? For example, what if I use an a capella snag from this site in a totally new song? Or if I reproduce the lead of a cool song and otherwise create a totally new song?
My sense is that artists and DJs typically pay homage when they crib other people's works like this primarily by careful naming of songs. But do they pay royalties or take other steps to keep from getting hounded by lawyers?
Is there a well established "fair use" policy for partial use of other people's music? Or are artists and DJs simply counting on other artists to appreciate the free publicity they get when others use their source material? Cross your fingers and wish the lawyers away? |
