it'll still be around for a while methinks. cd's aint dead yet. and you can still get vinyl if you look hard enough. people wont embrace it if you have to change too much like getting new players

Interesting... although how many record companies and/or artists/bands will want their music in this format?

Ham Seung-chul, chief of Audizen wrote:
Unlike other digital formats exclusively used by big companies such as SK Telecom, Audizen allows users to copy the MT9 files, making it a more attractive format. ``It's like having a CD or cassette tape. Once you buy it, you can lend it to your friends. We don't want to be too fussy about DRM (digital right management),'' he said.

it should technically stop piracy, but then again there will always be someone trying to get around it. and so it goes.....on and on and on and on.......you get the picture

The replacement for MP3 was MP4 (AAC).
The format is far superior to MP3 but thanks to microsoft choosing not to support it we are still
lumbered with the ancient MP3 format everywhere.

This new format is a very interesting one but I cant imagine it ever being in the mainstream.
I hope it finds a place in the market, but it has too many obstacles;
Big labels effectively wanting to release remix packages?
What are the size of these files? They need to be smaller than MP3 to replace it.
To replace MP3, the file needs to be playable with a standard Windows media player.
(If it wasnt for itunes, no one outside the broadcast industry would probably have
heard of AAC)

I wish for all lossy formats to die. Why? you may ask...

For arguments sake; a cd of 12 tracks retails at £9.99p. Something that you can touch and can feel and aside from the process of mastering the contents to fit the 44.1/16 cd standard you get what was mixed and mastered.

With lossy formats you get a sizeable but important lump discarded. Ok, some will argue that you can't tell the difference between a cd quality mp3 to an actual cd but the people who mix and master the damn things do notice, but at £0.79p per track the consumer is under the impression that they save money because of the packaging and distribution removed from the cost. In truth the consumer is saving £0.51p from the original and spending £9.48p on something worth less than £2.20p in comparison to the original size of data available and that decreases the lower the bit rate. The only people not getting anything from the industry is the consumer.

The consumer should be given the best possible product and not some far inferior modified version that reduces the transfer speed. Surely that is the reason why so many spend so much time and effort aiming for their mix to sound so good only for it to be dumped onto the world with inferiority sound quality than the point they ended their hours of tweaking and manipulating.

I have used flac for many years for online exchanging and will continue to do so. Primarily because it reduces the size of the file to a size comparable to mp3 but without the loss of any of it's content. This is what should be used and not lossy formats.

I thank you

Personally I prefer OGG Vorbis and have used it for years. Its algorithm gives a much warmer, richer sound to the resulting compressed files (think vinyl compared to CD's). Bit for bit OGG Vorbis is a lot more efficient than MP3 too so you can choose from having a file at the same percieved sound quality of MP3 but at a smaller file size or a file of the same size as an MP3 but at much better quality. Start pushing the bit-rate up high enough and even the most highly trained ears would start to have trouble recognising it as a lossy format (I suppose the same could be said for MP3's (only with bit rates higher than vorbis I might add!) but they still don't have the warmth of a Vorbis compressed file).

Fortunately, and probably largely due to its entirely 100% free and open-source nature (unlike MP3) OGG Vorbis playback is being introduced on more and more MP3 players and personal audio/video players.

FLAC and Vorbis are bed-buddies too. They're both developed by Xiph.Org Foundation.

this would require all songs that have been mastered to a .wav to be remastered and mixed down into this format, seperating drums guitars vocals ect. ect. ect. maybe its something cool for the future but i dont think it will take over as a whole.
i cant see good things with electronic music being mixed down to 6 seperate channels, it will cause all sorts of sampling problems for artists and engineers to cover up

The same way cd will be around forever so will mp3. Vinyl's still alive and kicking, especially if you live in a metropolitan area.

Exactly. this is more of a fad that will appeal to the likes of you and I but will have very limited appeal otherwise. Its a cool concept but it wont even come close to replacing the mp3 when it comes to the general public

so i think it's fair to say.....the answer to the question is this....not on your life, mp3 will not die. however the corporate monkeys try and kill it. i know there are better formats out there. but until other people get their head around to the right way of thinking, in respect of quality. mp3 is here to stay...........for now
