hi, my name is homey and i just recently fell in love with music and its beats.
i currently have the program adobe audition 3 and have been toying with it.
im a beginner at this and was hoping for some help.
i've heard that its possible to extract the instrumental from a song or the voice ( a cappella ) from it.
Right now im trying to get the acapella from a song called stand up by flobots. Which seems easy enough, because it just has a repeated violin as the instrumental.
Problem is, im unable to get the a capella from it.
i've read through all your tutorials available here and im still kinda not getting it. can anyone help me please? |

Welcome to the site Homeyz, great name btw.
Unfortunately your question is like asking;
'Im trying to drive a car but cant, whats wrong?'
You have petrol? You have put it in gear? Taken the hand brake off?
Im in a good mood today as my fever is dying down and Ill hopefully be off the
medicine soon and back on the beers!
So ive done a quick forum search of acapella+audition for you.
Read me and tell us where you get stuck |

alrighty, i get the whole concept of putting 2 songs on the multitrack (regular and instrumental) then inversing(flipping) one of em, then lining them up perfectly, which causes the instrumentals to cancel out.
but....
my problem is, there is no instrumental for the song im trying to get the a capella out of.
so is it possible to make your own instrumental?
i know i am ignorant atm but its because i don't know anything about this much, and am in the state of learning. please help me out again? |

You can try, but it's quite hard and doesn't yield the results it seems your after.
It's pretty much touch and go if there isn't a straightforward instrumental for you to use. So you'll have to try all sorts of ways you can think of. |

Dont feel bad about asking, most of us are born experts at breathing, but pretty much
everything else in life has to be learnt from the beginning!
As J says, its very unlikely to give results.
Theres a couple of people who have claimed its possible but Ive yet to actually
hear any results from these people.
Did I mention I have a pig that can fly..... no sorry you cant see it, its in my other field
Ive never got round to trying it for myself but you can look for the 'knockout' plug in.
I laughed when I read the release notes.
They stated something along the lines of;
'It doesnt work very well but see what you can do'
The problem with creating an instrumental is the most common way of doing this is
with phase reversal.
Now you line up your new 'instrumental' with the original version.
Then you........ oh sh*t, I just phase 'un-reversed'!!
If you think about it hard enough, there really doesnt seem to be a solution for it.
In my experience you really need both the original and instrumental off the original CD.
To get results from even 2 high quality MP3s you need to be a genius! (Or VERY lucky!) |

well i've been playing around with the song, and i have actually manage to get the a capella from it thanks to totum who wrote a very good tutorial.
but i got some more questions lolz
- How were people able to make the instrumental exactly like the original song? (having the same wavelength)

- There is actually an instrumental version when you buy a CD album?? or do u have to buy a seperate CD? (because i remember buying a backstreet boys album when i was a lil kid and they didn't have instrumental in there)
Third question....
- What are the basics in remixing a song? (hip hop and r&b in general)
please state your opinion please. |

Not sure I completely understand the question. The original instrumental will simply
be exported from the studio mix without the vocal channels in the mix.

'Backstreets back alright!!'
Fair play for admitting that! Ill come clean and admit to having Kylie - I should be so lucky
on a 7"
Albums rarely have and if they do they may not be ideal.
An album is usually mastered collectively so all the songs have similar dynamics
(if any these days)
Mastering is another process affecting the waveform which is unwanted for DIYing.
The original CD single sometimes, the promo CD quite often.
By far the most valuable resource for these is ebay.
Record fairs often have some real gems to, Ive never left one without a carrier bag
full of tunes and never spent more than £25.

This question will get a much better response if you start a new topic with it.
Maybe 'mashup chat' or 'Audio chat' |
