I have recently been having a go at using logic for the mac and am just wondering what is the best program for creating nice house beats also what teqhniques could I bear in mind to get my beats sounding phat and would I have to export the beats has audio or can you sequence the beat as you go along.
cheers.

Hmmm...quite the mouthful...

A) "what is the best program for creating nice house beats"
I've not had any experience of Logic, but I see no reason why you can't program beats in it. Get some decent samples, chop 'em up (I don't know if you can do it in Logic, but something like the free Audacity can do it), lay down a 4/4 bass drum and play with snares and hats, etc (D'n'B producer TC uses SoundForge and Logic to do his beats).
For ease of use, Fruity Loops' Step Sequencer will give you a 4/4 beat in no time, but I definitely suggest you get better samples than those provided with FL. Though really, any DAW will give you the ability to program a beat, whether or not you have to chop a sample up in a separate program to begin with.

B) "what teqhniques could I bear in mind to get my beats sounding phat"
Layering of your sounds, particularly Bass drums can help to make your beats sound big, but some sensible EQ'ing and Compression can go along way in helping to get your beats hard-hitting and in your face.

C) "would I have to export the beats has audio or can you sequence the beat as you go along"
Depends if you're doing everything in a single program, i.e. just Logic, or using multiple programs. Chopping the beat up in a separate program means that you'll export each part as a separate file, then import them into Logic in their own channels, then program them.
In FL, you can do beats and everything else in the one program, but to move an FL beat into Logic, you'll have to export it and import into Logic.

Hope it helps some, maybe someone with more experience with Logic will be able to help you more.

Logic has the EXS24 which is a powerful sampler.
Any audio or .Rex files can be loaded into this and assigned a key on Logics and your keyboard/ Midi controller.
Pressing 'Apple' + '6' will open up your 'piano roll' where you can manually draw the blocks in where you want
your samples played and quantize them with precision to the beat or quantize them to give a natural feel
(like a live drum kit)
There is also the Ultrabeat drum machine which I admitedly havnt explored yet but has an amazing
amount of options and to fully customize every single sound included in the huge library of presets.
Combine these 2 with Logics awesome automation and your only excuse for not creating beats of any genre
is lack of patience or no ears!

The thing that lets Logic down is its prehistoric audio editing.
With a lot of swearing and a slight loss of hair its useable but it should be a lot better

I do all my drums in FL, it just seems like it's made for drums, but I'm sure any DAW will do it. I fatten up my house kicks with a couple of compressors, and sometimes add delay, but keep the cut almost down to nothing so it's hardly a delay, but kinda gives the kick a roll to it. Then layer a second kick that's has a little more attack and less punch and compress that once or twice. You just gotta keep playing with effects and compressors till you figure what does what to the sound your running through it.

I can only speak for myself, since i dont want to start another software flamewar. I used FL a looooong time ago and really enjoyed it. Now i use Reason 4.0 for everything music related, and im even happier... i just love it.

Yea logic is quality, just keep fooling around in it and you will find out just how comprehensive it is.

you just gotta watch your mixes if you want the fat noise. mess around with the EQ and FX and you should get alot closer to what you want.

I just purchased logic pro 8 a little over a month ago. I had used logic last about 3 or 4 years ago when it was almost version 7 but still in 6. The audio plugins have been upgraded and improved immensely. As has its audio editing though not as much as the pluggins. Ultrabeat is an amazing instrument and practically worth the price of admission all on its own. Great sounding samples and the ability to route individual samples to their own outputs for seperate processing and to be able to do so easily is a huge boost to your ability to "make your beats phat". Its really the best choice if ur on a mac. No I dont work for mac or sell their products either Smilie_PDT
